Myofascial release is a very safe and effective hands-on technique that is specifically aimed at treating dysfunctions and pain in the myofascial structures of the human body. “Myo” is Greek for muscle and “fascia” is Latin for band. Simply put, myofascial is the multi-layered continuous sheath of connective tissue that completely surrounds and enshrouds our bones, tendons, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Myofascial release involves applying gentle, sustained pressures into the restrictions present in myofascial connective tissues which ultimately helps to eliminate pain and restore motion. This is a very holistic practice and can sometimes feel very subtle. However, this low load (gentle pressure) which is applied slowly (this essential “time element”) will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate.
